Chaos in Naples! Ultras set fire to a police vehicle

Date:

Tensions are rising in Naples hours ahead of tonight’s Champions League match between the local team and Eintracht Frankfurt. After several incidents last night and this morning, throughout this afternoon there have been clashes in the center of the city between German fans and dozens of people with their heads covered by helmets.

The intervention of the forces of order caused scenes of chaos and fear as a result of launching all kinds of objects and flares that set fire to the police vehicle.

Some 600 German fans arrived in Naples despite a ban on the sale of tickets to Eintracht supporters issued on Saturday by local authorities.

The incidents began when the German fans, who arrived in a procession this morning in the central Piazza del Gisù from the seafront, had to board buses that would take them back to the hotel where they were staying.

At that moment several dozen masked rioters appeared and fought as riot officers tried to separate the two sides and disperse the ultras.

Finally, German fans may be transferred to public service buses accompanied by a police cordon. In their wake, the Neapolitan ultras threw stones and bottles, breaking several glasses.

An operative of 800 police has been deployed in Naples in anticipation of incidents after the disturbances registered three weeks ago during the first leg played in Frankfurt.
