Benfica has announced who will be its coach

Date:

Benfica announced on Wednesday that it had reached “an agreement in principle” to take German Roger Schmidt, current coach of PSV Eindhoven, as coach for next season. The Lisbon club have clarified that the deal is “not yet formalized”, although all indications are that Schmidt will lead Benfica from July, replacing Nelson Veríssimo.

In a statement released on Wednesday to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM), as the club is a public limited company, Benfica clarified that “negotiations are underway”.

Roger Schmidt, 55, PSV manager from 2020-2021, manages teams such as Beijing Guoan, Bayer Leverkusen and Salzburg. The German will replace Nelson Veríssimo, who has coached the Da Luz team since the end of 2021 after the departure of Jorge Jesús.

Benfica are currently third in the Portuguese League standings, 14 points behind the leader, Porto, and 5 behind Sporting, its local rival.
