The controversy over espionage jeopardizes the validation of the anti-crisis decree

Date:

The Pegasus case has broken Sanchez’s parliamentary majority and the executive looks to the PP to secure the validation of the decree, which will be voted on this Thursday.

The Congress of Deputies will vote this Thursday on Spain’s government decree-law containing the economic response plan to the war in Ukraine, a vote that falls amid controversy over alleged political espionage by pro-independence leaders and their entourage. The crisis, which still shows no signs of readjustment, has led to a rift between the executive and its partners in the legislature that threatens to complicate the adoption of the decree.

The government has asked the political groups to take responsibility for enforcing measures in force since April 1 that include direct aid, such as the fuel discount, for a total amount of 6,000 million euros, with an additional 10,000 million in ICO guarantees. for bank loans.

Long-standing partners such as ERC have warned that they could vote against if responsibilities are not taken. This alleged espionage will also determine the vote of other parties such as EH Bildu, JxCAT or the CUP. On the contrary, the PNV spokesperson, Aitor Esteban, has clarified that his party “will not confuse matters with matters that could be transcendental for citizens”.

In this context, Pedro Sánchez’s board hopes that a possible abstention from the PP will validate the decision.

The party chaired by Alberto Núñez Feijóo has not yet released its vote but was willing to facilitate its adoption if the government agrees to process it as a bill to include a tax cut, among other things. In that case, it will vote in favor after the parliamentary procedure.

The tax cut for middle and low incomes, a reduction in VAT on electricity, measures to streamline the management of European funds and to reduce bureaucratic and political expenditure are the four commitments that the PP is requesting in writing from the executive to support the validation of the anti-crisis.

The decree-law, whose validity is in principle only until June 30, includes the bonus of at least 0.20 cents per liter of fuel and the limitation of the rental review to 2%; the extension of the tax credit on the electricity bill; extend the social bonus for electricity to more households and reduce the so-called “falling from the sky” benefits for electricity companies by 90%.
