The fourth monument conquered by Tadej Pogacar at the Tour of Flanders puts the 24-year-old Slovenian on a milestone in cycling historybecause he linked his name with Eddy Merckx and Louison Bobet as the winner of the Tour de France and “De Ronde”.
The new feat of Pogacar, with 2 Tour de France, 2 Lombardies and 1 Liège Bastogne in his record, has drawn praise from the legendary Eddy Merck, “The Cannibal”whose ambition to win is currently on a par with the leaders of the UAE Emirates.
“Not only did Pogacar win, but you have to consider how he won, his style, and his courage when attacking.. I think he is a rider who is already entering the big leagues and raising the level of the sport and cycling in a way that is rarely seen,” said Merckx.
According to Belgian legend, Pogacar “He is a complete runner, with a tendency to break into the race.“.
“I think he can easily beat Milan-Sanremo, he just needs to attack later, where Mathieu van der Poel did it. For Paris Roubaix it should have some weight,” Merckx told Het Laatste Nieuws.
Tadej Pogacar is also the only cyclist with Merckx to win three monuments before the age of 25. After Liège-Bastogne-Liège (in 2021) and the Tour of Lombardy (in 2021 and 2022), here comes the Tour of Flanders. Now the challenge is to win all 5 monuments. He has two more left: Milan-San Remo and Roubaix.
