The 29 cobbled sections of the 120th edition of Paris Roubaix that will take place this Sunday will have a new name in one of them, that of the legendary Belgian cyclist Eddy Merckx“El Caníbal”, triple winner of the ‘Hell of the North’, where he will be the seventh rider to receive such an honor.
Bernard Hinault, Marc Madiot, Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle, Frédéric Guesdon, John Degenkolb, and the late 2018 Michael Goolaerts, already have the “pavé” sector to their name. Now the greatest of all time is added.
Merckx, winner of 5 Tours de France, 5 Tour of Italy and 3 World Cups, among many other victories, prevailed in Paris Roubaix in 1968, 1970 and 1973. This year, in the Camphin-en- sector Pévèle, the closest to the Belgian border the Belgian legend will see his name coinciding with the 50th anniversary of his last victory in Paris Roubaix.
“Having a sector in your name makes you immortal“Merckx, 77, summed up for many the best cyclists in history.
