The victory of Chile Nicholas Jarry against the australian Alexei Popyrin placed him in the round of 16 of the Monte Carlo tournament, for the second time in his career in the top sixteen of a Masters 1000 category event.
The tennis player from Santiago, who was at the gate of the top 50, came back from Popyrin in the second round and won 3-6, 7-5 and 6-4 to reach the round of 16 for the second time in his career.
After four years and six months, Jarry would return to eighth in the Masters 1000. He then reached this stage in the Shanghai tournament and fell against the British kyle edmund.
The Chilean will face the Greek in the third round Stefanos Tsitsipassecond seeded, current champion and third tennis player in the world.
“I’m very happy with the match I played against Popyrin. I started well and went on to play better and better and I ended up imposing my game. I’m happy with that and I think I can still improve,” said the Chilean after the game.
“I have a very nice challenge with Tsitsipas and I hope to be at the level to play the best possible match”, confided Jarry who is now at the gates of the top 50 of the ATP ranking.
The Chilean number one played Tsitsipas only once. It was in 2019, at the Hertogenbosch tournament, on the ground. Then the South American player won in three sets (6-4, 3-6 and 6-4).
