Carlos’ candle scored his second and third goals of the season and provided an assist, and Los Angeles FC hold for 2-3 away wins against rivals LA Galaxy on Sunday in Carson, California.
Vela’s second goal came from the penalty spot in the 68th minute to give his team a second lead. Two minutes later, he found Ryan Hollingshead for the game-winner as LAFC (5-0-2, 17 points) remained the only unbeaten team in MLS.
LAFC’s first signing before its introduction to MLS in 2018, Vela now has 10 goals and three assists in 10 MLS games against the Galaxy. This was LAFC’s first victory in the rivalry as a road team.
John McCarthy made three saves, including an outstanding 1-on-1 from Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez, to help LAFC to its fourth straight win in all competitions. Two of those came in MLS and the other two came in a 6-0 aggregate win over the Vancouver Whitecaps in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.
‘Chicharito’ assisted Marky Delgado’s final goal in his first start of 2023. But it did not prevent the Galaxy’s third straight loss (0-4-3, 3 points), a streak in which they scored eight goals. Tyler Boyd scored his first MLS goal before halftime for the home team and Jonathan Klinsmann made seven saves.
After a sluggish start to the second half, the game came alive when José Cifuentes reacted to steal a Galaxy throw-in. Substitute defender Sega Coulibaly brought Cifuentes down inside the box and referee Armando Villarreal immediately signaled the point. Vela stepped up and got past Klinsmann.
Two minutes later, Hollingshead made it 3-1 when he eluded Delgado to head a Vela corner past Klinsmann from close range.
The Galaxy did not give up and may come back with better fortune. Riqui Puig tried it with a shot from distance moments before McCarthy saved a Chicharito shot in the 82′. Delgado made it 3-2 when he finished Chicharito’s cross in the 84th minute and McCarthy made another save from Lucas Calegari in stoppage time.
