The French center of Arsenal William Salibawith a back injury, will miss Wednesday’s key clash in the title race against City of Manchester, as announced on Tuesday by the team’s coach, Mikel Arteta. Saliba is suffering from structural pain in his back and is confident of his recovery, but in the short term it will not be possible.
“There’s really no improvement, unfortunately, so we’re still hoping and hoping, but another week has passed and he hasn’t been able to train with the team,” the Gunners manager told a news conference. Arteta refused to give more details about the nature of the injury or whether, as the English media claim, the player could be sidelined for the rest of the season.
“For the moment we have to do without him. We are preparing for this game without him and he will probably lose the next one well, so we have to see week after week,” he says of the Frenchman, a basic piece of the team until a few weeks ago he was injured in a match in Europe, since then the ‘gunners’ have dropped their performance with several setbacks.
Saliba was injured in the second leg of the Europa League round of 16 against Sporting and his absence was a major problem in the Londoners’ final championship sprint. With Saliba, Arsenal added 2.4 points with an average of 0.9 goals per game, while without him they only got 1.8 points conceding 1.8 goals.
