The European Association of Clubs (ECA) is concerned about the “current widespread practice” of national associations calling players for world before the mandatory release period begins, which is July 10, 10 days before the start of the event in Australia and New Zealand.
The ECA says it has received a “volume of alerts” from clubs on the issue and warned that the health and welfare of players could be at risk. “This is not about financial compensation or lack of adequate protection and insurance, but about serious concern for the welfare of the players,” ECA head of women’s soccer, Claire Bloomfield, said in a statement released on Wednesday. “The early call-up problem is a holdover from the game in its fledgling form and is detrimental to the future success and growth of women’s football.”
Chelsea manager Emma Hayes has called for stricter restrictions on international windows. Several top players including the England captain Leah Williamson and Netherlands forward Vivianne Miedema has been ruled out of the World Cup due to a serious injury.
“There’s a reason and a rationale for those windows because, especially in the last three years, players have had very little rest, maybe a few weeks at the end of the season, and it’s not enough,” Hayes said.
