The International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) and the organizing company of the MotoGP and Superbike World Championships, the Spanish Dorna Sports, announced this Saturday the creation of a women’s world championship.
The FIM Women’s Motorcycle World Championship will be a new competition that aims to expand women’s access to motorcycling sport and create a representative platform for female riders.
With its launch in 2024, the initial series will run alongside the Superbike World Championship and the aim for the first season is to have at least six rounds, with two races per round.
The grid will compete with both machinery and a single supplier of motorcycles, to be announced later.
The new championship aims to create opportunities for female riders already competing by providing them with an environment where they can build a viable professional motorcycling career, and aims to lay the foundation for more equal representation in all motorcycle paddocks in the world.
Jorge Viegas, President of the FIM, explained that “this is the first time, since 1904, that we will start next year with the FIM Women’s World Championship. We have given it many turns and our needs are huge. Just like we are doing in Motocross, Enduro and Trial, we will start with a women’s World Championship next year in circuit racing. Our plan is to hold six races in Europe, and we plan to do a one-make competition. We will try to get of women from all over the world to compete in this new Championship. It will be organized primarily within the framework of the WorldSBK Championship.”
“This is a Championship where we want women to become professionals. It’s not a transition to another category, we want women who race here can earn a salary as pilots, as professionals. I hope to start with March or April next year.”
