When Sam Lowes is sweet, it’s very hard to beat him. And this weekend at Jerez the Briton rode one of his best grands prix since his World Championship debut in 2014. He has always raced in Moto2, except in 2017 when he moved to MotoGP only to go down again. He is undoubtedly one of the fastest riders in the intermediate category, but his irregularity has prevented him from challenging for a championship despite being the rider on the current grid with the most races and the best record in Moto2. In Jerez he was unruly since Friday. He was fastest in free practice, took pole position on Saturday and finished with victory in the race on Sunday, leading from start to finish and including a fastest lap to win what they call the ‘Grand Chelem’ in Formula 1 . Only at the start did he give up the first position to the push of Pedro Acosta, but before completing the first lap he was already leading the race and that was the end of the story. Acosta tried to get hooked on his wheel in the first few laps, but the Englishman’s pace was too fast and Acosta started to think more about the championship than victory. With a lead of two seconds throughout the race, Lowes was able to drive the final few laps and enjoy his first win in two years. For Acosta, second position was a treasure as it increased his lead in the standings, tied on points with Italy’s Tony Arbolino, fourth at Jerez but with two wins to his name. Acosta already warned that he would run in championship mode for these first races of the year and confirmed this once he got on his third podium in four races. “The most important thing was to add the maximum number of points and given the conditions of the race and how strong Lowes was, the maximum today was 20.” Third place was an Alonso López who finished a world away from the top two, but again on a podium that took him to fourth overall. Third is still Arón Canet, perhaps the one who came out of Jerez in the worst form. And this despite finishing in fifth place after coming back from the fourth row.
