Antwerp won the Belgian Cup on Sunday for the fourth time in its history after beating Mechelen 2-0 in the final with a first-half penalty goal by Dutchman Vincent Janssen and another in the second by his substitute Michel-Ange Back again.
At the King Baudouin stadium in Brussels, Antwerp sealed its fourth cup title, after achievements in 1955, 1992 and 2020, in its fifth final.
Antwerp opened the scoring in the 35th minute thanks to a penalty taken by a Mechelen defender Dries Wouters, who overthrew the Dutch Jurgen Eckelenkamp within the area.
Janssen repeats his punishment
vincent janssen had to rescind the penalty after he threw the first pitch early in front of the umpire, Jonathan Lardot, I was about to whistle. The striker picked the opposite corner on his second attempt and scored again.
Mechelen had options until the final stage Back againwho came on for Janssen in the 73rd minute, scored Antwerp’s second goal after a quick counterattack and finished off a cross from the Dutchman’s left Calvin Stengs.
