the Belgian Greg VanAvermaet, Olympic road champion in Rio 2016 and winner of Paris-Roubaix 2017will retire at age 37 at the end of the season, as announced Wednesday.
“My professional cycling adventure ends after this season,” he wrote on Instagram. “Although it was a difficult decision to make, looking back I am very proud of what I have achieved.”
At the end of this season, Van Avermaet will end his contract with the French team AG2R-Citrôen, where he has raced since 2021 but where he has yet to sign any success. Before that, he was a member of Lotto (2007-2010) and BMC/CCC (2011-2020).
In addition to Olympic gold at the Hell of the North, Van Avermaet has two stages in the Tour de France and one stage in the Tour of Spain.
In 2017, he won the Paris-Roubaix, the Nieuwsblad, the GP E3 and the Ghent-Wevelgem, and led the UCI world ranking that year. He also has the Paris-Tours (2011), the 2016 Het Nieuwsblad and the Montreal GP (2016 and 2019).
