This Saturday saw the semifinals of the Catalonia Open WTA 125 – Reus Costa Daurada International Trophy, with the final set for this Sunday at 12:00 in CT Reus Monterols. The title will be played by American Elizabeth Mandlik and Romanian Sorana Cirstea.
The 21-year-old American Elizabeth Mandlik, who came from the previous stage, was the revelation of the tournament. For the first time in her career, the number 147 in the world ranking will play a final on the WTA circuit.
Mandlik overcame Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska in three sets (7/5 4/6 6/4) in two and a quarter hours. The American was able to make the most of the successes and failures of the Ukrainian, while at the same time he played without complications, with a fast and direct game that did not answer his rival.
In the second semifinal, Sorana Cirstea (33), the second seed of the tournament, fulfilled the predictions and defeated the American Lauren Davis 6/4 and 7/5 in 1h40. The Ohio tennis player was ahead in both sets by 4/2, but the Romanian, with a score against, showed his best tennis, clearly dominating his serve and his forehand.
Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez became champions. In the finals of the doubles draw, the Australian couple defeated Alexia Guarachi and Erin Routliffe 6/1 7/6.
Before starting the day, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, Tennis Català ambassador, gave a clinic in which eighty boys and girls participated. He was also accompanied by Jordi Tamayo and Laura Pous.
