Tony Brooks, the last Formula One Grand Prix winner to survive the deadly 1950s and become world runner-up in 1959, has died at the age of 90, his daughter Giulia revealed.

Born as Charles Anthony Standish Brooks on 25 February 1932, Brooks became known as the ‘Racing Dentist’, combining his dental studies at the University of Manchester with the start of his professional career, as Brooks became qualified as a dentist. in 1956.

Gentle speaking, calm and without the obvious star quality of other British drivers such as Stirling Moss, Peter Collins and Mike Hawthorn, however, Brooks is a very fast driver, having won six Grands Prix (in just 38 starts ). with his victory at the 1957 British Grand Prix at Aintree, which he shared with Moss.

Brooks made his BRM debut at the 1956 British Grand Prix, and went on to drive for Vanwall in 1957 and 1958, before Enzo Ferrari chose to dive for his famous team, and Brooks was about to win the title in world in 1959.

He rode until 1961, and on his last outing he earned a podium finish at the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen for BRM, before leaving the sport to focus on business.

Highly appreciated by his peers, Moss always says of Brooks that if he had to create his own Formula 1 team and pick any two drivers to race on the squad, Brooks could be one of them, along with Jim Clark by his side.
