The departure of the Italian, time trial world champion in 2020 and 2021, is a heavy blow for Ineos as many riders are candidates to fight for the pink jersey.

Second in the prologue, Ganna himself has big ambitions for this Sunday’s 35km individual time trial between Savignano sul Rubicone and Cesena.

He is the fourth rider to withdraw from this 106th edition of the Giro due to positive Covid-19 after Frenchman Clément Russo (Arkéa-Samsic) on Thursday and Italians Nicola Conci (Alpecin) and Giovanni Aleotti (Bora) on Friday.

In the days before the start of the Giro, last Saturday, other riders had to withdraw for the same reason, including three of Primoz Roglic’s teammates in the Jumbo-Visma team.
