Johannes Rauch, health minister of the Greens, has responded to demands from the healthcare system and now wants money for 500 extra panel doctors to relieve the overcrowded hospitals. “It is feasible and affordable,” he said on Saturday.
For example, the positions could be financed by a millionaire tax, which coalition partner ÖVP has always rejected.
Rauch thinks that 500 extra doctors in the private sector would relieve the burden on hospitals. The health system is good, but “extremely complexly organised”. The basic problem is different funding pots.
“I’m trying to improve that. It needs 500 additional panelists, it needs more primary care centers, it needs an offer that I know as a patient will not be sent in circles,” Rauch said in an interview with the “Kleine Zeitung “.
Financing via millionaire tax?
The minister sees two options: “Federal reforms are in the offing, but not in the next 100 years. Or financial settlement. It is now being negotiated and I am relatively confident that we will get something done.” Rauch answered the question about financing: “What speaks against a millionaires’ tax if the assets are distributed unfairly? But that’s a story in itself.”
