On March 3, we looked forward to the immediate future of VAR in Spanish football, both in the First and Second Divisions. A new scenario, as a result of the decision adopted by the Delegated Commission of the RFEF on November 16 of last year and which addresses the years that they can continue to perform their duties as VARs, once they finish their activity as field referees .
In that Commission, as stated in the minutes of the same, it was determined that “they can only act for a maximum period of two seasons after the completion of the arbitration activity on the pitch.”
Decision exclusively addressing the employment situation currently maintained by all former referees and assistants performing these VAR and AVAR functions at the RFEF.
As a result of all this, and as we detailed on Thursday, only one of the five members of the current specific VAR body will continue next season. It is the Aragonese Jaime Latre.
None of the remaining four do: Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva and González González. Galician entered in 2019 and Castilian from Leon, in 2020. The same is happening in Estrada Fernández and Medié Jiménez, given that both are incorporated in the summer of 2021. In the coming month of July both seasons will be completed.
What happened last night at the Mestalla accelerated this output. The decision of Iglesias Villanueva not to show De Burgos Bengoechea All the rows ending in Vinicius’ slap have alarmed the RFEF, as he is one of four affected in the First Division.
Thus, the initial intention was that none of the seven affected by this VAR output, the four from the First Division and the three from the Second Division, would be reassigned to either of the two categories. This means the last two days in the First Division and the last one in the Second Division, in addition to the subsequent promotion play-offs.
VAR in Primera next season
This indicates that next season the specific VAR body in the First Division will initially be made up of two former referees. Property Jaime Latre with Carlos del Cerro. A third party can be added if finally accepted by Mateu Lahoz.
As a consequence, next season all First Division squad referees will have to once again perform the VAR function. In the last two seasons, the specific VAR and the international referees have been performing these duties. Only in case of necessity, is when other non-international referees act as VAR. If they do it regularly as AVAR.
