The International Boxing Association (IBA)suspended by the IOC, an organization with which it sustained a long controversy that resulted in two different qualifying calendars for Paris 2024, gave its fighters, coaches and referees a free hand to participate in the European Games in Krakow in June (Poland), the main pre-Olympic tournament for Europe designated by the IOC.
In this way, the president of the IBA, the Russian Umar Kremlev, declared, “athletes are protected and isolated from sports politics.”
As happened before Tokyo 2020, the IOC withdrew from the IBA the powers to organize the pre-Olympic tournaments in Paris 2024, after financial, administrative and arbitration irregularities led to its disqualification.
IBA responded with its own timetable and threatened action against participants in events selected by the IOC.
In this retreat, boxers are allowed to fight for official Olympic places, waiting for a solution, which does not seem close, to the conflict between the two entities.
The United States federation withdrew from the IBA and a small group of some advocated the creation of an alternative body, called World Boxing. The IBA therefore suspended those in New Zealand, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden, and the Czech Republic for allowing Americans to register in a competition.
