Manuel Pellegrini gives special credit to the third consecutive qualification for the Europa League achieved by Real Betis, who this season had to overcome many obstacles. “Fortunately, we managed to qualify for the Europa League for the third year in a row. This year maybe with some important obstacles, that’s why I appreciate the victory more. The first three games with five unregistered players, got we got results because of the commitment of the squad. Also with the fourteen sent off we lost players for a lot of minutes, we got eight or nine points out of thirty three, it punished us a lot. But we managed qualify for Europe three rounds before it ends, because we were in the Conference two rounds ago, and now we have done it in this field, against an opponent who plays football well”, said Pellegrini after the win in Montilivi.
Pellegrini appreciates the special relevance of this victory against Girona after the team’s two poor performances in recent games: “We came from two performances where nobody was happy; neither the draw with Sevilla nor the defeat against Getafe gave us any satisfaction despite coming off two good games against Bilbao and Rayo Vallecano”. Returning to the match in Montilivi, for Pellegrini “it was amazing to end the first half 0-1 because we dominated the whole match, Girona did not come close to our goal. At halftime we said we have to stay the same. We managed to turn the result around and I think they are three well-deserved points”.
“The two identical goals came but I think the creativity and offense of the team from the first minute was very good. As the individual performance improves, the team improves as a whole. We are mobile, creative, and that makes us of the same team we always play”, explained the Chilean.
Finally, Pellegrini has a few words for Borja Iglesias, who has already scored fifteen goals: “A very important number for him. Borja may have lost a long time because of the goal but he had the maturity to understand it, keep working and regain his place in the starting eleven”.
