An almost eerie series: within an hour there were three paragliding accidents in Obersteiermark on Sunday afternoon. Two people were seriously injured.
The first accident happened in Seckau (Murtal district): Shortly before noon, a 46-year-old from the neighboring district of Murau embarked on a paragliding flight on the Hochalm, which was to take him to the Seckau sports field. After a few minutes, however, the pilot encountered a downdraft over a patch of forest and rapidly lost altitude.
At first the man wanted to land in a meadow 100 meters from the sports field, but that was no longer possible. So the 46-year-old walked up to a twelve-foot tree and clung to it. He was able to initiate the rescue chain himself and was eventually rescued from his predicament by the mountain rescue service and the Alpine police. The man was not injured – two trees and his paraglider were damaged.
Umbrella suddenly collapsed
A 49-year-old from the Liezen district had less light: he started his paraglider on the Moralm an hour later and wanted to load it on a large meadow in Ardning. During the landing approach, the glider suddenly collapsed for an unknown reason, so that the pilot crashed on the opposite slope next to the pasture.
The victim was able to inform his sons, who set the rescue chain in motion. After initial medical attention, the 49-year-old was flown to the UKH Linz by the rescue helicopter Martin 3 with presumed serious injuries.
Towed through rocky terrain
And a 41-year-old German had to be taken to Spital (Judenburg) with the rescue helicopter (C17). She also started with a paraglider from the Hochalm, ended up in the Ingeringgraben (municipality of Gaal) and wanted to break off the flight near the Untere Sundlhütte.
During the direct landing approach, the paraglider was opened again by the wind, dragging the 41-year-old through rocky terrain several meters up the slope. Her left leg is now broken.
