The International Boxing Association (IBA) considering that The IOC Executive’s decision to recommend to the assembly that it withdraw recognition of the boxing organization was “a misstep” that it strictly addresses political interests and reserves “the right to take a retaliatory measure.”
“Now we have no choice but to seek a fair review from a competent court”declared the president of the IBA, the Russian Umar Kremlev.
The federation was temporarily suspended by the IOC in 2019, after several irregularities in governance, finance and arbitration were noted.
As was the case before the Tokyo 2020 Games, the International Olympic Committee took over the pre-Olympic tournaments ahead of Paris 2024, with a calendar of competitions challenged by the IBA by organizing its own programme.
The IBA published a report on Tuesday with its reforms, which the IOC hopes will be reinstated, but the Olympic body’s Executive met on Wednesday to study them and concluded that they did not meet the conditions it asks in 2021 to lift the penalty. .
However, the Executive in Session, which will meet on June 22 to study the matter, will also recommend that boxing be kept in the sports program of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
IBA’s reaction was immediate and it declared it “ready to act”, according to a statement.
“The International Boxing Association considers the IOC Executive Board’s recommendation to withdraw IBA recognition to be an aberration and purely political, as it all efforts made by the IBA, including its democratically elected leadership, were largely ignored and is not considered by the IOC”, he pointed out.
“The IBA, as the headquarters of boxing, reserves its right to take revenge, because the organization in its current state will never recognize a claim that it does not meet the standards of good governance or that it does not it deserves its place in the movement. In addition, the IBA categorically denies all accusations that it damages the reputation of the Olympic movement, but instead respects and follows the recommendations of the IOC.”
