“We didn’t achieve the goals we set for ourselves”

Date:

Jon Uriarte took yesterday his first year at the helm of the Athletic at the sports level. The president coined three words to sum it up: “self-criticism, ambition and optimism.” The head of the entity clarified that “we did not achieve the goals we set ourselves, ambitious goals”.

At the men’s first team level, Uriarte recalled that it was about qualifying for Europe and going to the Cup as much as possible. “A complex subject supported by data. In the last 23 years, Athletic have been to Europe eight times and not in the last five. We were close to achieving it, but we stayed on the beach. We achieved it all in a fascinating -attractive game, which attracts fans, with an average attendance of 43,000 people and two attendance records”, he said.

Regarding the women’s Athletic, Uriarte indicated that the initial goal was to be in the first third of the table and the Cup as a complement: “We did not reach the goal, we stayed on the sidelines. There were many important casualties from last year but despite the production of Lezama and the emergence of young women we decided to set that goal. We regenerated and rejuvenated the squad”.

Mikel González, Athletic’s director of football, also had an impact on the development of the first two teams. “We cannot be happy with the classification, but we are optimistic and we understand that we are on the right path. Perhaps we deserve better results and more prizes both in the League and in the Cup. We should have scored more than eleven points”, he argued.

His conclusion about lions is “the hardest thing, the game, we have it; but it’s disappointing when you build a lot, especially in San Mamés, and you are superior to your rival”.

Regarding the Women’s category, González asserted that “the competition is growing more and the market is more aggressive. We have a young squad and it has been a good year in terms of transitioning from the academy to the first team. The League is divided into three blocs and we are in the middle. 10 of the 11 players in the lineup for the Cup final are under 23, which reinforces the work done and serves as a message of optimism. The future is guaranteed.”
