The best years for Italian football turned out to be the saddest, as in each of the three European finals there was an Italian representative in 2022-23 and all three lost. Inter, runners-up in the Champions League, join Roma (who lost in the Europa League final) and Fiorentina (who lost in the Conference League final) this Saturday.
The season was historic for ‘calcio’, but in the end none of their teams won the European title in which they competed. The curse began in José Mourinho’s Rome, winner in 2021-22 of the first edition of the Conference League and fell on penalties on May 31 in the 2022-23 Europa League final against the great king of the competition, Sevilla (with seven in the showcase of this).
Fiorentina continued the Italian misadventure, which on Wednesday lost in the Conference League against West Ham at the Eden Arena in Prague (0-1, goal by Jarrod Bowen).
The tragedy in Italian football ended with Inter’s 1-0 defeat, scored by Rodri, against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in Istanbul. The first for City and the third for Guardiola (after the two he achieved at Barcelona, 2008-09 and 2010-11).
