Brooks Koepkathe first LIV Golf player to be crowned a ‘major’ champion, acknowledged Tuesday that neither he nor his teammates had “a clue” about the merger between his circuit, the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour announced last week, which has shaken the world of international golf again.
“There was a surprise because we didn’t know anything about it. I think that surprised us the most”said Koepka, winner of five ‘bigs’ in his career, including the last PGA Championship, at a press conference before the start of the US Open in Los Angeles.
Koepka is one of the great golf figures who decided to leave the PGA Tour last year to join the new LIV Golf circuit, which is funded by the government of Saudi Arabia and has million dollar economic prizes.
“The parties have entered into an agreement combining the golf-related business and rights of PIF (including LIV Golf) with the business and commercial rights of the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour into a new entity to in income, jointly owned. , for ensure that all stakeholders benefit of a model that offers maximum emotion and competition to the best players in the game,” the three circuits announced in a statement at the time.
The news was not well received by some golfers who remained loyal to the PGA Tour amid the earthquake, but Koepka considered there was more tension in the media than the players themselves.
“I don’t think there was much tension between the players in general. I think this is something that is published in the media, more than the players. I didn’t pay much attention to that. I tried to prepare myself for this week,” Koepka said.
“I’m not going to waste time watching the news that came out last week,” he said.
