A serious boating accident has occurred on the Niger in central Nigeria. More than 100 people are said to have died, including a wedding party with children. The boat sank while bringing families back from the celebration in Kwara state.
A tragic accident happened on Monday morning, Nigerian police confirmed on Tuesday. According to reports, there were about 300 passengers on board the ship, including wedding guests and many children. There is no concrete information on police deaths or injuries as rescue efforts are still ongoing.
However, several eyewitnesses reported many fatalities. Umar Bologi, the traditional leader of the region’s Nupe ethnic group, told the BBC on Tuesday that at least 150 people are reported to have died in the tragedy.
Initially, nothing was known about the cause of the accident. However, similar shipping accidents with many fatalities are not uncommon in Nigeria. The reason is often overloaded and poorly maintained ships.
