Metz rushes to safety and Lyon walks away from Europe (3-2)

Date:

Fourteen games later, since they won Reims on January 16, Metz has won again (3-2) to speed up some chances of staying in Ligue 1, with two more days before the end of the competition.

Frederic Antonetti’s group is still making calculations. Late in the standings, Saint Etienne, in the promotion position, is three points behind, and Clermont, who is scoring safety, is five points behind. However, they both have one game less.

Lens’ win over Lyon cost a lot, as it becomes increasingly difficult to play in European competition next year. With the defeat at the Municipal Saint Symphorien stadium, Strasbourg’s fifth place, in the Conference League position, is now five. Peter Bosz’s team, which conceded his tenth defeat of the course, did not reach the Europa League.

The good start of the local team made things easier. Half an hour later, Metz took the lead from a corner taken by Lenny Lacroix and passed to Vincent Pajot to get the ball into the net.

In the 40th minute, a pass from Pape Sarr was used by Cameroonian Didier Lamkel to beat Anthony Lopes again and extend Metz’s lead.

Lyon recovered before the break with a goal from Moussa Dembele after a great cross from Brazilian Tete.

The game was shaken in the second half although the visitors lost hope in the dismissal of Thiago Mendes in the 68th minute. However, Moussa Dembele revived Bosz’s team by scoring an equalizer in the 84th.

But in extra time, which Metz was revoked, a superb pass by Papa Ndiaga Yade used by Algerian Farid Boulaya left three points for Saint Symphorien.
