This should be an important first free practice session at the 2023 F1 Canadian GP. Rain is expected in Free Practice 2 and will also rain throughout the day on Saturday. There are more doubts ahead of Sunday’s race, but what is clear is that this Friday’s Free Practice 1 should be the only chance for the teams to get some data and dry conclusions before Sunday’s appointment. But it can’t be because of something inexplicable. Just 5 minutes into the session, a red flag was shown for a problem with Pierre Gasly’s Alpine. But the red flag will remain until the end and it will not run the rest of FP1 due to another setback in May. Route security monitoring camera network failed. The local authorities have to get down to work to try to solve this problem, because without security cameras you cannot compete.
So, the people who were in the stands from the beginning were left without a show due to a technical problem that, at the level of the competition, at the biggest motorsport event in the world, this shouldn’t happen.

Aston Martin, most affected by the red flag
The problem affected all teams ahead of Sunday’s race. But more than those that come with big packages of improvements, as is the case with Aston Martin or Williams. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll got to test their new sidepods, floor and engine covers to start getting valuable data on the relationship between track and simulator, in addition to starting to understand how to get the most out of these new parts in terms of setup and balance to be as competitive as possible on Sunday. However, both Alonso and Stroll are skeptical.
This Friday is expected to rain in Free Practice 2, so drawing conclusions from the new parts in these conditions will be very difficult for the Silverstone team. F1 has announced that it is studying the possibility of extending the duration of Free Practice 2 to compensate for the loss of filming time on the asphalt. But no matter how long they last, the biggest damage has already been done: the teams lost a good chance to ride in the dry.
That just means more unknowns for Sunday in terms of everyone’s rhythm, the tire wear and the approach.
