Girona: 19 ‘joys’

Date:

June 19 or ‘Joy’ 19, call it what you want. Just a year ago, Girona returned to the First Division after three years. The third is the charm in Tenerife after two slaps Montilivi in previous attempts.

The red and white fans scared away the ghosts of Elche and Rayo Vallecano to hit the table exactly the year they didn’t start as favourites. The reward for effort, sacrifice and not giving up came at a moment when the entity, the city and any flag held on the balconies by two clothespins needed it most.

It all started with a stop Juan Carlos in Burgos. Girona didn’t decide on the play-off places until the last day and they were about to run out of prizes. Girona, a territory accustomed to dreaming because of the successes achieved year after year, had to face Eibar, a team that surrendered the lead on the last day to look for third place. This is probably the toughest rivalry and almost impossible after losing the first leg played Montilivi.

If the players have one thing, it’s hunger, from the youngest to the most veteran. The team encouraged the fans for the return, they were convinced of the real options while many others did not want to prolong their supposed ‘false illusions’. Not only did it win, it reached its third final in three years. Again, it will suffer until the end.

The final against Tenerife ended goalless in the first leg, also in the rojiblanco fiefdom. There were no ways to beat the island team all season, two defeats in League games and a tie that left the second leg of the final open.

It’s time to travel to Tenerife, it’s time to trust and don’t look back. Girona had positive results in the two previous finals. This time it was not so bad, but they had to face 11 rivals and 23,000 people from Tenerife who were ready to do everything to get back to the gold category of Spanish football. The island celebrated carnivals and the festive atmosphere infected all its inhabitants. It’s impossible to take a nap between the horns and fireworks, this is the big day.

The Catalans remained calmer than ever. They already know what it’s like to celebrate early. The players, surprisingly, were calm in the circumstances. Because? The pressure is on them. And even then, the people of Girona destroyed the men’s party led by Luis Miguel Ramis.

This is a fact. Girona is back in Primera heaven. Stuani’s crying is a reflection of the dream of a veteran turned child. The city went crazy twice, the basketball team returned to ACB on the same day that Míchel’s team celebrated on the plane the dream that many saw as impossible early on. The club, players and fans became ‘Uns Tossuts de Primera’.
