A dozen Ukrainian elite athletes are fleeing the horror of war and their respective families will meet and train until June 30 in La Nucía (Alicante).
This group is made up of displaced athletes eight athletes, two coaches and eight close friends and they will have their operations center at Camilo Cano Olympic Stadium.
They were on a final date in Montegordo (Portugal) and they arrived on Tuesday, May 10, in La Nucíawhere next week they will participate in the Ibero-American Athletics Championships, which will take place from May 20 to 22, as a guest nation (without the possibility of having a medal).
The 9 athletes are high jump athletes Oksana Okunieva, 32 years old and a personal record of 1.98 meters; Dmytro Zuyev, 17 and has 2.00 m. brand at Kateryna Tabashnyk, 17 at 1.99. Also men with the same discipline are Andrii Protsenko, 33, and Oleksandr Zuiev, 14.
The other athlete was 400-meter athlete Anastasiia Bryzgina, 24 years old and with a personal best of 51.89 seconds.; and men Danylo Danylenko, 27 and 46.04 also in the 400-meter dash; Sergii Smelyk, 35 and 10.10 in the 100-meter dash and 20.30 in the 200; and Serhii Nykyforov, 28 and 8.23 in the long jump.
The trainers were Nataliia Gredunova and Gennadii Zuiev M. in this group of 18 people.
At a press conference to present the Ibero-American Championship, the president of the Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA), Raúl Chapado explained that the arrival of this group has not been easy and appreciated that this was one of the initiatives made in support of those affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“This is a very high level group that will train in La Nucía with coaches and family fleeing from the horrible“from the war.
Regarding their association with Ibero-Americans, as the twenty-fifth participating country, Chapado reported that they will be “another in the parade” and their association is “more than medals” because they seek to “use sport to continue for a lifetime ”.
“We donate our grain of sand for people in need“, added the mayor of La Nucía, Bernabé Cano.
