The former midfielder Manchester Utd, Tom Cleverly, announced his retirement from soccer at age 33, citing nagging injuries. The former England international recently captained the watford and joined the Championship team on loan from United in the 2009–10 season.
Cleverley made 181 appearances, scoring 19 times and registering 15 assists in his six-and-a-half years at Watford after a second loan spell from Everton and making the move permanent in 2017.
His final season was blighted by injury as he missed 29 games for Watford who finished 11th in the Championship standings. Cleverley underwent surgery for an Achilles tendon injury that kept him on the sidelines for an extended period at the start of last season, before suffering a thigh injury in February.
“Today I announce my retirement from football as a player. The last year has been very difficult trying to overcome the obstacles of injury,” the former Premier League winner said in a statement on Saturday. “Unfortunately, my body failed me and it no longer has the ability to function.”
A United youth squad member, Cleverley made 79 appearances for the Old Trafford side before joining Leicester City, Watford, Wigan Athletic, Aston Villa and Everton on loan.
“A special mention must go to Manchester United… The people and the club that gave me the foundation as a player and a person and also the club that made my dreams come true…” ” To everyone involved with Watford FC. I am privileged to call this club… The love you showed me as a young man in debt once I retire as an adult I will never be able to repay.”
