the italian cyclist Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), 37, announced on Wednesday, after playing in the fifth round of the Giro, that he will retire at the end of the season.
The Sicilian runner made the announcement in conjunction with the arrival of the fifth stage in Messina, his hometown, where he received the love of his countrymen.
“I’ve been waiting for this stage for a long time. Here in Messina I started cycling and training, so I want to confirm that this is my last Giro and my last season,” Nibali told RAI, with tears in his eyes, at the end of the stage.
Nibali is one of the oldest cyclists in the international peloton. On his record he has two Giros d’Italia (2013 and 2016), a Tour de France (2014) and a Vuelta a España (2010), as well as achievements in classics such as Milan-San Remo (2018 ), the Giro de Lombardía (2015 and 2017) or the Tirreno-Adriatico (2012 and 2013).
In total, the Italian cyclist counts eleven participations in the Giro, nine in the Tour de France, six in the Vuelta a España and four Olympic Games.
