In the first Formula E race in Italy, a horrific high-speed accident occurred on the ninth lap that forced a halt to the competition. Jaguar’s Sam Bird, who led the opening lap after starting on the front row with teammate Mitch Evans, lost control at Turn 6 while in fourth place.
Although several drivers avoided hitting Bird’s car after it bounced off the wall, Sebastien Buemi hit the Jaguar which came to rest on the tracks. The impact was so strong that it sent Bird’s Jaguar back towards the middle of the track, prompting Stoffel Vandoorne to hit the wall to avoid it. The matter did not end there because immediately Edoardo Mortara could not avoid having a head-on collision with his Maserati.
The chaos resulting from the accident caused a ripple effect that affected other drivers, including Antonio Félix da Costa (Porsche), Lucas di Grassi (Mahindra) and Robin Frijns (Abt Cupra). Fortunately, all the drivers involved in the incident were able to get out of their vehicles and are being treated at the medical center. Finally, it is possible to confirm that all pilots are fine. About an hour before the race resumes.
