At the end of May, in Monaco, an accident involving ‘Checo’ Pérez and the subsequent taking of a car with a crane on the streets of the Principality allowed Red Bull’s rivals to rub their hands together. For the first time, they see the champion car’s best-kept secret: its floor.
The ground is the part that generates the most downforce on current F1 cars., the main one for single-seater performance. For this reason, everyone needs to remember an element that, at first glance, surprises everyone because of its unique appearance compared to the floors of other cars that are also exposed, such as in Mercedes or the one of Ferrari. At first glance, you can fully understand the enormous amount of work that went into this main part and the level of detail that Red Bull has achieved with that element.

Since then, there has been speculation about the possibility of other teams trying to copy that floor, adapting it to their aerodynamic concepts or understanding its composition for the future car of 2024. Red Bull was not worried, but some of its rivals said publicly that it could be a very good help.
Last weekend, at the Hungaroring, another ‘Czech’ incident revealed an update on that floor again. So on Sunday morning, MD asked Tom McCullough, Aston Martin’s head of performance. “After looking at the pictures, is it possible to see a Red Bull-like floor on Aston Martin this year or in 2024?” this newspaper asked him in Hungary, at the meeting he always does with the press in the hospitality of the green team every Sunday morning of the Grand Prix.
His answer was not very clear. He indicated that the team is working on it and he is strong in making sure they come “more updates” on the ground part in a green car that stalled development due to lower capacity and speed of parts production. Until now, the team was working in a smaller and outdated factory and had to outsource the creation of most of its elements. Now, the group has moved to its new headquarters and must begin to grease the production line to reach the optimal level of part production that allows it to save time and reduce costs.
“We always look at any image and you always try to understand how to evolve. This year or next? The car is a continuation. What we see this year we will use for the next and with elements like the ground we have more evolutions for this year, like others will also have them”he commented.
“So, to answer your question: you always look at it closely and we will continue to bring updates to the car to improve performance this year.” McCullough argued with MD. It remains to be seen whether the improvements to come serve to make Aston Martin regain some of the ground lost in recent races.
From 2nd to 5th car
Aston Martin started the course as the second best car, but in Hungary, a track that theoretically favors the Silverstone car, it the 5th car on the grid behind Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari. Those at Silverstone have not thrown in the towel and are working to learn how to improve.
Mike Krack, Team Principalalso emphasized the work they will continue to do to improve in the rest of the course. “We have to grit our teeth”, said Alonso for his part. They will all follow as one, rowing in the same direction.
