Cameroonian football has rejected the investigation into Eto’o

Date:

The Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) rejected the investigation launched by African Football Confederation (CAF) about an “alleged inappropriate behavior” by its president, the former Barcelona player and former Cameroonian international Samuel Eto’o.

In a statement released late yesterday by Fecafoot, Eto’o’s lawyer, Elame Bonny, denounced that “until now (the former Barcelona player) has not been notified of any of the accusations allegedly made against him ” and called CAF’s announcement “damaging and toxic.”

This Wednesday, the governing body for soccer in Africa reported in a statement that it had received “written statements from various Cameroonian soccer players to investigate some alleged inappropriate that conduct” of That’s it.

“CAF investigates these requests in accordance with laws and regulations,” the organization said.

“Although the accusations are serious at first glance, Mr. Samuel Eto’o is considered innocent until a competent judicial body concludes otherwise,” it added.

In response, the former player’s lawyer said his client “reserves the right to initiate appropriate legal proceedings in due course,” stressing that Eto’o promised Cameroonian soccer players “to continue relentlessly in the implementation of the reform program initiated on December 11, 2021”.

On that date, the former captain of the “Indomitable Lions”, as the Cameroonian team is popularly known, was chosen as president of Fecafoot, something he described as “one of the proudest moments” of his life.

The player with the most titles behind him in Africa, won the victory with 43 votes compared to 31 for his main rival and outgoing president, Seidou Mbombo Njoya -whom Eto’o supported in the previous elections- and two abstentions.

The current president of Fecafoot was elected African footballer of the year in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010, and between 1997 and 2014 he played 118 games with his country’s national team where he scored 56 goals .

In his career, which spanned more than two decades, the forward defended the jerseys of Spanish teams such as Real Madrid, Leganés, Mallorca and Barcelona -where he lived his golden age-, as well as other teams in Europe like Inter Milan or Chelsea.

After a three-year stint in Turkey, where he played for Antalyaspor and Konyaspor, Eto’o signed for Qatar SC in 2018, before finally announcing his retirement in September 2019.
