The last cartridge of the UCAM

Date:

Despite their poor second round, the team can secure a place in the ‘play-off’ if they win today and Gran Canaria falls

UCAM has not arrived in its best form of the season when everything was put on the line. In fact, it has come to the worst. They have lost in five of their last six matches and what were ten first round wins and sixth position entering the Copa del Rey, now six wins with one match left to complete a second round in which only a team won fewer games than him: his rival today, Zaragoza (4). Of course, six other teams have the same balance of six wins and ten losses.

It has lost its offensive efficiency, the one it had for many days as the top-scoring team in the league, and gaps have formed in a defense that changes a lot when players like Lima or Davis are not on the field, making it dependent goes by name, the same case on the offensive when Taylor and Webb III are unavailable, and both have a long season. The downturn is so significant that UCAM reaches the final day with more defeats than wins, something that has not happened since it debuted with a defeat on the first day of its visit to Barça, that its quarter-final rival will be if de Sito that did their part and Real Madrid gave them the pleasure of winning in Las Palmas.

But it’s not about how this starts, it’s about how it ends. And today, winning could mark the second ‘play-off’ in the club’s history. And the third time UCAM has completed a regular season with no more defeats than wins. Leading the way, only the 18-16 of the team led by Fotis Katsikaris in the 2015-16 season, the one with the records for final position (seventh), total wins (18) and consecutive wins (5). And if today’s game ends like a palacio with bursting wishes, it’s tantamount to the 17-17 of the group Diego Ocampo trained in the 2014-15 season, the year the playoff required a minimum of 18 wins.

But the big milestone that Sito Alonso’s team is aiming for is signing the only season with a Copa del Rey and ‘play-off’ presence. To achieve this, the formula is very simple: they have to beat Zaragoza today and Real Madrid have to beat Gran Canaria at the same time. There is no other possible combination.

To fulfill their part of the deal, Sito’s men find it essential to correct their poor start to the games in recent days. He must gain confidence so that the news coming from Las Palmas does not condition his actions too much and before him will be a comatose rival, who is not dead. Zaragoza must win to stay in the Endesa League and by making it live throughout the game, a team without its fans becomes even more dangerous as the club promoted a bus trip and a ticket for the price of 30 euros and eventually had to withdraw it due to low demand.

The fact that the rival is lower in the standings, and especially in relegation positions, does not give UCAM any more chance of success this season. It leaves them even if we pay attention to the precedents. And it is that so far, UCAM has faced four teams in decline at the time of the collision: Bilbao on the fifth match day (last), Burgos on the eighteenth (penultimate), Fuenlabrada on the twenty-fifth (penultimate) and Betis in the twenty-seventh (last).

He won two and lost two more, the two in the middle, both extremely painful. Burgos was in the palace’s first game after the cup, and Fuenlabrada’s received 41 points in the final quarter, the fourth best mark in the league’s history in a period.
