Former world number 3 Cilic, 34, has fallen to 121st in the ATP rankings and has barely played several matches this season, the last of which was in July at the ATP in Umag (Croatia), his home, where he lost in two sets to the mediocre Italian Flavio Cobolli.
His last remaining performance in a grand slam it was last year’s semifinal at Roland Garros (losing to Norwegian Casper Ruud). At the 2022 US Open, he was eliminated in five sets by Carlos Alcaraz, in the round of 16, and eventually won the Flushing Meadows.
Denis Shapovalov, 24 years old and number 22 in the world, has not played since Wimbledon, a month and a half ago. “Despite all my efforts to be one hundred percent at the US Open, my knee needs more time and I am forced to retire,” the Canadian posted on social media.
