Mike Krack, Aston Martin Team Principal, is clear. Far from remaining calm after the green car was overtaken in the development race by Mercedes, McLaren and Ferrari, he was ambitious about the jump the team would regain in the second half of the championship.
Aston Martin went from having the second best car on the grid consistently in the first races of the year, amassing 6 podiums in 8 races with Alonso, to being the 5th best car in the final rounds before the summer break.
The evolutions brought to the track were fewer in number than its rivals, and the latter did not have the desired effect. Krack assured a few weeks ago that the team found the reason why the evolutions did not work and now surprised with his optimism for the next race, the first after the summer break, which will be held next weekend in Zandvoort . On ‘Sky Sports’, Mike Krack was asked if Aston Martin would be the second best car again at Zandvoort. I don’t doubt it. “Yes,” he answered emphatically.
“These cars are so complex that any change will affect other parts of the car, there are repercussions. There are very few changes you make to the car that work in isolation. We made a change early in the season and we didn’t expect it to have some of the side effects it did. It wasn’t until after a few races on different types of circuits that we realized how it was influencing the car”, explained Mke Krack a few weeks ago, reflecting on the causes of his car’s crashes that have been shown in recent races. And as soon as those setbacks were identified, Mike announced on ‘Sky Sports’ that the news would come at the next race at Zandvoort to start his comeback.
“For Spa we made some last-minute updates and that seemed to help a bit. So we’re very happy with our result. We’re constantly working to improve the car. We’ve seen how much we’ve lost and we’re going to do it up. We’ll try to win a little more than we have”, argued the Silverstone team leader, hoping to unlock his car’s potential.
Improvements for Zandvoort
“There are some things planned for the Dutch GP, we hope to close the gap again,” added Krack, confident that the new parts fitted to the AMR23 at Zandvoort will work. However, we’ll have to wait for Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll to test them in Friday’s free practice at the Dutch event to begin to draw clearer conclusions about whether Aston Martin has hit the key to straightening its course.
