New setback in Seine swimming events for Paris Games

Date:

Plans by organizers of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games to hold several swimming competitions on the Seine River, in the heart of the city, suffered another setback on Saturday with the cancellation of the test within the triathlon test that will be held this week.

It was decided by all parties involved that the Paralympic triathlon would be converted into a duathlon (2.5 kilometer run, 18.5 kilometer cycle and 5 kilometer run) and that the sight-swimming test was suppressed, the water quality tests.

These quality tests – they explained in a statement – revealed “significant differences” between the results of the latest testto “as a precaution and not to endanger the health and safety of the athletes” all swimming races have been canceled today.

In the statement, the Prefecture of the region of Ile de France, the Police Prefecture, the Paris City Hall, the organizing committee of Paris 2024 and World Triathlon They insist they are looking for “the causes of these differences” which will be communicated as soon as the information is available.

Another meeting is scheduled for Sunday morning. to determine, with tests made on new samples taken from the river water, if the mixed triathlon relay test can be carried out, the last ones scheduled.

Yes, swim trials can be held in the Seine on Thursday morning in the women’s triathlon competition and the men’s triathlon the following day.

However, on August 6, a free swimming test in the Seine water, a test that counts for the World Cup, also had to be canceled, again due to the quality of the river’s water.

In that case, this poor quality was attributed to the continuous rains that fell last week, and caused the sewers to overflow at some points, which led to part of the sewage going into the river when not passing the cleaner

With a view to the Olympic Games, but above all with the aim that the Seine as it passes through Paris can be a place suitable for bathing from 2025, a whole series of works has been carried out since 2016, with an investment of 1,600 million euros.

This includes, among other things, the modernization of two treatment plants upstream of the French capital, but also the construction of large tanks to store water in the event of heavy rains that prevent in the sewers that discharge directly into the river in those situations.
