A tragic accident happened in a forest near Liebenfels near St. Veit an der Glan in Carinthia on Friday evening. A 24-year-old Romanian man felled trees there around 7 p.m. Apparently a branch fell down and hit the forest worker on the helmet. As a result, the 24-year-old was thrown forward, pinned against the spinning chainsaw and seriously injured.
“Colleagues immediately alerted the police and accompanied officials from the St. Veit Department to the scene of the accident, who provided first aid there until the rescue and emergency physician arrived,” it said.
Rough terrain, rope rescue not possible
However, the road to the scene of the accident was so impassable that emergency services and fire brigade had to walk to the seriously injured man. “Even the C11 rescue helicopter was only able to land nearby on the edge of a meadow,” the police explained. “Unfortunately, a rope rescue was also not possible, because there was a high risk of falling from the adjacent trees.”
The 24-year-old had to be strapped to the adjacent forest path by the St. Veit volunteer fire brigade with a mountain stretcher and then taken to the rescue helicopter in a Pinzgauer. Only then could he be flown to the clinic in Klagenfurt. In addition to rescue, ambulance and two police patrols, 60 firefighters from Liebenfels, St. Veit, St. Urban and Glanegg were involved in the operation.
