The head of Slovakia’s internal secret service has been arrested. According to the special police NAKA (National Criminal Agency), Michal Alac is accused of involvement in a criminal conspiracy.
The background to the arrest is probably a power struggle within the EU country’s security authorities. NAKA had already raided other police bodies, the secret service SIS and the National Security Agency NBU on Thursday and arrested several people. Alac was on holiday abroad at the time.
According to media reports, the head of the Secret Service immediately returned after learning that he was being sought. After an initial interrogation, the police officers took him away. As a suspect, he may be held for 48 hours. Until then, a prosecutor must decide whether to release or detain him.
Political intrigue over upcoming parliamentary elections?
Police Chief Stefan Hamran insisted on Thursday that the police actions, codenamed “Rozuzlenie” (Slovak for “untie”), had nothing to do with the parliamentary elections. Opposition politicians, as well as parliament speaker Boris Kollar, accused him and the government of misusing the police to fight political opponents. Allegations of corruption against them would be constructed using manipulated witness statements. Police officers and secret service employees who wanted to bring this to light would themselves now be prosecuted.
