Defense costs billions – Zelenskyj on the situation in Donbass: “There is a hell”

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described the situation in the Donbass as “hell” given the Russian war of aggression. The army continues to work for the liberation of the Kharkov region, Zelenskyj said in his evening video speech on Thursday. “But in Donbass the occupiers are trying to increase the pressure. Hell is here, and that’s no exaggeration.”

Fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces has continued recently, especially in eastern Ukraine in the Donbass. The command of Ukrainian troops in the region reported on Thursday that 14 enemy attacks had been repulsed. The information cannot be verified. Numerous civilian deaths were again recorded as a sign of the intensity of the fighting. Authorities say five people have been killed in the Donetsk region alone.

Russia an ongoing threat?
Ukraine will be able to defend its independence, but neighboring Russia will always pose a threat, Zelensky said. “We will always think about protection. And we must understand that there is no better security than the willingness of citizens to defend their own state,” Zelenskyy said in an online conference with students and university leaders on Thursday.

Ukrainian society has shown its resilience since the Russian attack on February 24. But the country also needs security guarantees from outside. As a political tool, these should be well thought out and designed to last for decades. “We have to understand that Russia will always be there. And maybe it will always remain a threat,” Ukraine’s president said.

Aid funds “Contribution to your own safety”
For Ukraine, the Russian war of aggression means a budget deficit of about five billion dollars (4.8 billion euros) per month. “To survive in the war of freedom, we need fast and sufficient financial support,” says Zelenskyj.

Foreign partners of Ukraine should not see aid as costs or gifts. “It’s your contribution to your own safety.” Ukraine protects other countries from war. Together we must ensure that the Russian aggression is unsuccessful.
