An eight-year-old boy in Ostermiething in Upper Austria was injured in the face while playing with brake cleaner and fire. The boy suffered burns and had to be taken to the LKH Salzburg.
Two brothers from Ostermiething, aged 8 and 15, repaired a petrol quad together around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, which was causing problems when starting. They used brake cleaner to jump-start the carburetor.
Played with a lighter
The two then proceeded to play with the brake cleaner and a lighter. Initially, the 15-year-old sprayed some brake cleaner on a concrete slab and set it on fire. Then he took the can in his hand and lit the jet directly from the can.
Siblings provided first aid
At that point, the eight-year-old ran directly into the fire and suffered facial burns to an undetermined degree. The 15-year-old and 13-year-old sister immediately provided first aid. They took her brother to the bathroom of the apartment building and cooled the burns. The parents, who had just arrived home, immediately called the rescue service. The eight-year-old was taken to the children’s ward of the LKH Salzburg.
