Date:

the ethiopian Amane Beriso Shankule, winner of the 2022 Valencia Marathon, wins gold at the World Athletics Championships from Budapest with a time of 2:24:23, the season record, after leading a race in which his compatriot Gotytom Gebreslase took silver and the Moroccan Yalemzerf Yehualaw is bronze.

The women’s marathon brought together 78 athletes from 47 countries on the streets of Budapest to complete the journey to a ten-kilometer circuit with the goal of the Plaza de los Héroes, the same place where the walking tests also ended.

In the beginning, those who motivated the race by printing a very high rhythm They were the African runners, especially from Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda, although none of them could distance themselves from the large group that formed in the first twenty kilometers.

The leading group was reduced in the middle of the race and the Israeli Lonah Chemtai Salpeter slipped into it, of Kenyan origin, and also the Moroccan Fatima Ezzahra Gardadi. They lasted for several kilometers, until the Ethiopians changed their rhythm and went off on their own without seeing any reaction from their rivals.

After kilometer thirty, the group of four Ethiopians fell to three members after Tsehay Gemechu stopped and need to attend medical services. Gebreslase, Beriso Shankule and Yalemzerf Yehualaw followed their lead without looking back and opened a gap to their pursuers. The most complete of the three proved to be Beriso Shankule, who tackled the final kilometers alone, braving the sweltering heat of the city at eight in the morning.

Behind, Gebreslase, world champion in Eugene 2022, held at a careful distance to secure the silver medal, something Yehualaw was unable to do in bronze, crashing with three kilometers to go, when he was overtaken by Ezzahra Gardadi, who had done very well to reach that final stage.

Beriso Shankule raised his arms at the finish line to celebrate his victory and eleven seconds (2h24:34) came the Gotytom Gebreslase. Fatima Ezzahra Gardadi was third with 2h25:17.

The first Spaniard was Meritxell Soler from Barcelona, who finished in 27th place with 2h34:38. Behind, in 38th place, Marta Galimany from Tarragona, national distance record holder (2h26:14), recorded 2h37:10. The third Spaniard in the race, Fátima Ouhaddou left before kilometer 26.
