Sito Pons says goodbye to the Moto2 World Championship. After 42 years and 5 world championships for drivers, 3 team titles, 71 victories and more than 230 podiums, the PONS Racing team decided to move on at the end of this season.
During these years in Moto2, the team became one of the main characters of the championship and riding the stature of Pol and Aleix Espargaró, Fabio Quartararo, Maverick Viñales, Alex Rins and Augusto Fernández passed through it.
The history of PONS Racing goes back to Sito Pons’ own two World Champion titles in 1988 and 1989. In 1992 he would make the jump to 500cc with Álex Crivillé, achieving the first victory for a Spanish rider in the category.
Pons managed to make his team the last team title winner, defeating the officials. Among all its pilots, the Spanish names Álex Crivillé, Alberto Puig, Carlos Checa stand out, as well as pilots Alex Barros, Loris Capirossi, Max Biaggi, Troy Bayliss, Tohru Ukawa.
In the second stage in the intermediate category, PONS Racing the last team to achieve victory in the now defunct 250cc category at the hands of Héctor Barberáand in 2013 he achieved success by winning the Moto2 title with Pol Espargaró, adding two more world champion titles to the team, as well as two MotoE World Cup titles with Jordi Torres, in 2020 and 2021.
From 2024, the PONS Racing premises will belong to the MT Helmets team – MSi in the Moto3 category, a team owned by Teo Martín, ensuring the continuation of most of the PONS Racing staff, one of the areas for this acquisition.
There are 10 Grands Prix left for this season and PONS Racing will focus on continuing the fight to achieve the best possible results with his two pilots, Arón Canet and Sergio García, and say goodbye in the best possible way.
“Sometimes you have to make some decisions and I think now is the time to close this successful phase that we have enjoyed as a team.. Since my time as a driver, there have been 42 years in the championship and when we did the project we knew that we wanted to be a top team and season after season and we were always fighting with the best. And our phase in MotoGP was very successful, as well as the years in Moto2″ declared the former world champion.
“I am proud to have contributed to the development of the sports careers of all these pilots and some of them are the main characters in MotoGP today. PONS Racing’s commitment has always been to support Spanish riders and serve as a shuttle to MotoGP and we have done this, giving them the best tools to achieve the best results and training them both professionally and personally ,” he added.
“I will never forget all the sponsors who have been a part of the team. We always felt supported and thanks to them we were able to do all these projects. My most sincere thanks. And also to all the drivers, mechanics, team personnel who trusted PONS Racing. People are what make the team work and we are lucky to have the best. I would also like to thank everyone at MotoGP, Dorna and IRTA for their continued help and support. Now is the time to step aside and face the future with optimism. We will always see each other on the circuits” he concluded.
