The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has incorporated an eSports Commission for the first time in its working groups, the agency reported on Friday.
The French David Lappartient, president of the International Cycling Union and the French Olympic Committee, will be in charge of the new Commission.
“We believe that virtual sports can help promote the values of excellence, friendship and respect. which is at the heart of the Olympic Games and can encourage young people around the world to take part in sport and live an active and healthy life,” said IOC President Thomas Bach of Germany.
In announcing the new composition of its commissions, the IOC stressed that gender equality would be maintained which has been reached in 2022. Of the 583 people working with them, 287 are men and 296 are women.
Among the few novelties on the list is Bach’s appointment of Costa Rican Rebeca Grynspan and Colombian Alexandra Guaquetá as independent members of the IOC Advisory Committee for Human Rights.
The first, former vice president of his country, is secretary general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
Guaquetá is a member of the United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights and currently works at a multinational consultancy focused on sustainability.
Spanish presence
