The UN boss was convinced: – Africa could become a “renewable energy superpower”.

Date:

The first African climate summit started on Monday in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. The three-day meeting will focus on expanding renewable energy sources and financing climate protection projects in Africa. UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday called on the global community to help the continent become “a renewable energy superpower”.

“Renewable energy could be the African miracle. But we have to make it possible,” said Guterres. In particular, he called on G20 countries to “take responsibility” in the fight against climate change. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), meanwhile, has announced a $4.5 billion investment in clean energy in Africa.

According to Kenyan figures, the African climate summit with some 30,000 accredited participants is an important step towards the UN climate conference (COP28) that will start in Dubai at the end of November. The aim of the meeting is to present ‘African solutions’ to the fight against climate change that are jointly supported by the countries of the continent, as the president of the host country, William Ruto, explained beforehand.

Von der Leyen also participates
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen will also be present at the African Climate Summit. According to her agency, she and the Kenyan head of state Ruto will start a strategy for the climate-neutral production of hydrogen in Kenya and participate in a discussion about the international financing of climate projects. Before the deliberations begin, a speech by der Leyens is planned.
