Many parts of Spain are currently at the highest alert level due to severe storms. The entire country is affected by heavy rainfall. Drastic measures were taken to protect the population. Nearly 10,000 people were temporarily not allowed to leave their apartments and houses. In the Catalan municipality of Alcanar, an indefinite curfew was imposed due to the dangerous situation.
In just one day, as much as 215 liters of rain per square meter fell in Alcanar, in southern Catalonia. An unlimited curfew was imposed here, the emergency service announced this morning, according to NTV.
Alcanar residents were urged to flee to the upper floors if possible to avoid the flooding. Early in the afternoon, the emergency service announced the end of this security measure via X (Twitter).
A message from the Alcanar municipality (see above) said on Sunday evening: “All teams continue to work in the affected areas and this afternoon the cleaning crews will be reinforced to bring the situation back to normal as soon as possible.”
But heavy rainfall not only caused problems there, large parts of Spain were also affected. Including the capital Madrid. So there was a real flood in the metro (see video below), a red alert was issued, several country roads had to be closed due to flooding, public parks were closed and a football match between Atlético and FC Sevilla was postponed.
Emergency services also had their hands full in Toledo. Cars were washed down the street.
According to train company Renfe, train services between Valencia and Barcelona have even been suspended due to the persistent rainfall.
The torrential rain began Saturday and is expected to continue through Monday morning with hurricane-force winds and thunderstorms.
The highest alert level also applies in Andalusia and Castile-La Mancha, and the yellow alert level applies to Mallorca. The island was hit by storm Betty this weekend.
