The former president Barack Obama congratulations on Saturday Coco Gauff for his US Open title, less than two weeks after witnessing his first return to the tournament. After Gauff defeated Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, messages quickly poured in on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter celebrating the 19-year-old American’s first Grand Slam title.
“We couldn’t be more proud of you on and off the court, and we know the best is yet to come,” Obama wrote. He and his wife, Michelle, were at Arthur Ashe Stadium on opening night when Gauff rallied from 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 against Laura Siegemund. They met with him after the game, followed by a tribute to Billie Jean King as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the USA Open, which became the first sporting event to offer equal prize money to tennis players of both sexes.
Michelle Obama also sent congratulations with a photo of their meeting, while Bill Clinton wrote: “The future of American tennis looks bright.”
“The support I’ve received has been incredible,” Gauff said. “Obviously, President Obama and former First Lady Michelle, it’s crazy that they’re here at my first-round game, and I’m a different person now.”
Gauff thanked King for leading the fight for the prize money as he collected his $3 million check. King responded with a tweet showing a video of the moment, posting: “This generation is living the dream of the original nine,” referring to herself and the other women who signed the $1 contract to launch a professional women’s circuit in 1970.
Magic Johnsonthe retired Lakers star, also congratulated Gauff and praised his parents, writing “Corey and Candi, you did an amazing job!”
Gauff has received praise from rival tennis players, including the 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephenstelling her that “my girl, you are amazing!!!!”
