Matthijs de Ligt began its second season in Bayern Munich after arriving from Juventus. The 24-year-old Dutch defender had a great first year, where he played 43 games and won the Bundesliga and the German Super Cup. However, that doesn’t appear to be the most outstanding thing he’s done in his career.
The muscular central defender explains: “The truth is that I did well at Juventus. Bayern were eliminated from the Champions League by Villarreal and they contacted my agent. They said: ‘We are looking for a defender’. Then was asked by my agent if I wanted to go to Bayern. I immediately said, ‘If possible, I would.’ That was around May or June. It was completed in the middle of July.” “I had a good time at Juventus, but when a club like Bayern wants to sign you there is always the possibility of winning the Champions League…”
However, De Ligt would not say that the Bayern championship was his ‘highlight’. “The highlight is undoubtedly the Champions League campaign with Ajax (2018-19), where we reached the final. But the championship with Bayern is definitely in the top five. Why I prefer the Champions League with Ajax than the league title with Bayern? Because this series with Ajax happens once every twenty or thirty years. On the other hand, for eleven or twelve years now, every season there has been a championship with Bayern. Of course, this is very special for me because it’s the first.”
